Ex-Belo doctor says: I just 'retouched' buttock implant

MANILA, Philippines – A cosmetic surgeon denied yesterday that he performed the initial buttock augmentation procedure that businesswoman Josefina Norcio claims nearly killed her.

Norcio has filed charges against the Belo Medical Group, alleging that the hydrogel implant caused an infection that landed her in the hospital since last May. The BMG identified Dr. Francis Decangchon, who used to work at the clinic, as the one who did the procedure.

“I only did the retouch. I did not do the initial implant procedure,” Decangchon said. He said Dr. Reynaldo Cayetano, also of BMG, did the buttock augmentation procedure on Norcio in 2002, and he only did a retouch in 2005.

Decangchon clarified that he is not in hiding, and said he recently visited Norcio at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.

He said he resigned from the BMG in 2005, months after he did the retouch on Norcio, and put up his own clinic, the Aescultura Laser and Liposuction Center.

British students in Chinese swine flu quarantine

PARIS (AFP) - – A group of British students has been quarantined in China after four tested positive for swine flu, officials said Saturday, as Georgia confirmed its first case and Singapore reported a first flu-related death.

The four confirmed to have the A(H1N1) virus have been hospitalised while the remaining 48 pupils in the group and their teachers had been quarantined in a hotel in Beijing, the British Council cultural organisation said in a statement.

In Singapore, authorities reported its first death linked to swine flu after a 49-year-old man who was diagnosed with the virus died in hospital.

"He died of a heart attack, contributed to by severe pneumonia with underlying influenza A infection," the ministry of health said in a statement.

The man, who suffered from diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, was diagnosed with swine flu after he was admitted to a public hospital on Thursday, the statement said.

Georgia said it had confirmed its first case of the virus in a Georgian woman who had arrived from London.

"This is the first swine flu case in the country," the ex-Soviet republic's health minister, Alexander Kvitashvili, told a press conference.

"The patient was isolated and is under medical observation. Most important is that the case was revealed properly," the minister added.

In a separate incident in China, a British student from another group was quarantined along with a teacher for two days after she showed a heightened temperature when she arrived in Beijing this week, the British Council added.

The student showed no flu symptoms and was later allowed to rejoin the group, the statement said. She was part of a group of 362 students and teachers from 41 schools on a British Council-organised language course.

China has launched aggressive measures to try and detect swine flu, including temperature checks on foreign flights coming into the country.

In Italy, the start of the next school year could be put back to try to reduce the spread of swine flu.

"A possible postponement of the start of classes has not been ruled out," deputy Italian health minister Ferrucio Fazio was quoted as saying by the ANSA news agency. No decision had yet been taken, he added.

In North Africa, two new cases were confirmed Saturday in Morocco, bringing to 28 the number who have come down with the virus in the kingdom, its health ministry in Rabat said.

One of the patients as a Moroccan woman aged 32 recently back from Britain, and the other was an 18-year-old American who had come over from Spain.

In the French region of Britanny, officials said a female American tourist was admitted to hospital in Avranches to be treated with the anti-viral Tamiflu after tests determined that she had the virus.

European Union Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou predicted Saturday that 60 million people across the European Union would need priority vaccination against swine flu, a report said.

The commissioner was speaking to Portuguese news agency Lusa while on a tour of member states within the 27-member bloc.

She said the numbers needing jabs in groups most at risk had been estimated at 60 million by the EU's executive arm, but warned: "There won't be vaccinations for everyone."

In Chile, the rate of infection from swine flu is declining, according to authorities in one of South America's worst affected countries.

Despite a death toll that has now risen to 40, health authorities in Santiago believe there will be a respite from the virus after a winter wave of infections.

In the last table released by the World Health Organisation on July 6, the UN agency had recorded 94,512 laboratory-confirmed cases in 136 countries and territories since April, including 429 deaths.

The WHO said Friday, however, it would stop giving figures on the numbers infected with A(H1N1) to allow countries to channel resources into close monitoring of the spread of the disease.

Biglang bira, nabuo ang selula sa haybat at tumubo. Sa
panahonan, ay naitulak sa buka. Natungga sinag ng labas,
buhat man sa ligas, o burdan.

Nang buksan ang mga mata, at nakislapan nangatog ang loob, at
simula na mamulak ang sintang utak. Mula waling unang hapag at
mga susunod pa.
Lakbay sa oras sampay sa ranas at sakay sa landas ay buod ng
biag.

Patol nito'y madaling mauhaw,
tiis ay natutuyo at uuwi sa kubol, kung saan
ang ginhawa ng pahinga'y mapatuloy,
Hanggang…

Mahimbing tulog, ay basbas ng kamatayan .

Drug firms submit cheaper meds list

MANILA - Drug companies under the Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines (PHAP) on Saturday submitted their proposal to slash prices of 21 medicines in the Department of Health's (DOH) recommended Maximum Retail Price (MRP) list.

The PHAP met the deadline given by Malacañang for them to submit a proposal on how to make commonly prescribed medicines cheaper to the people.

PHAP executive director Reiner Gloor said the proposal was submitted Saturday morning to the DOH and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Essentially, the proposal would slash the prices of 21 medicines, but not necessarily by 50%. Some could be lower or higher than 50%, Gloor said.

Gloor admitted their proposal would have a 40% to 50% impact on their sales, but it will be a welcome development if it drives more people to buy.

He said the PHAP, as an industry, supports the goal of improving healthcare.

The drugs covered by PHAP's proposal include:

* amlopidine, telmisartan, irbesartan, which are anti-hypertensive drugs;
* clopidogrel, an anti-thrombotic drug;
* the anti-cholesterol drug, atorvastatin;
* the anti-diabetic drug, gliclazide;
* piperacillin + tazobactam, ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, metronidazole and co-amoxiclave, which are anti-biotic drugs;
* bleomycin, carboplatin, cisplatin, cyclophosphamide, cytarabine, doxorubicin, etoposide, mercaptopurine, methotrexate sodium and mesna, which are anti-cancer drugs.

Dr. Robert So, head executive assistant of Office of the Secretary-DOH, confirmed that the PHAP submitted its proposal Saturday at 10 in the morning.

He said they will submit the proposal to President Arroyo on Monday.

So said it is up to the president whether to accept the proposal of PHAP.

Roxas presses Palace

Earlier on Saturday, Senator Mar Roxas asked Malacañang where the list of the essential medicines that pharmaceutical companies volunteered to sell at lower prices was.

Roxas said pharmaceutical companies were trying to skirt a presidential directive on price ceilings on medicines.

"Nasaan na ang listahan ng mga gamot na pwede na nating bilhin sa abot-kayang halaga sa mga botika?" demanded Roxas, as a deadline for voluntary compliance by pharmaceutical companies with the Cheaper Medicines Law expired on Saturday.

"Ang tagal na nating nag-aantay. Deadline na ngayon, pero wala pa rin (We waited a long time for this. The deadline is today, but we see no cheaper medicines list yet)," Roxas added.

Roxas had been pressing for the voluntary compliance deal worked out by President Arroyo with pharmaceutical companies. Under that deal, pharmaceutical companies were supposed to submit by Saturday a list of medicines they volunteer to be sold at slashed prices.

Roxas has "criticized Mrs. Arroyo for favoring voluntary compliance with the Cheaper Medicines Law instead of imposing a maximum retail price on medicines."

He said an executive order (EO) imposing the price ceiling has been awaiting Mrs. Arroyo's signature since June 16.

Some of the drugs whose prices will be halved under the EO are the anti-hypertensive Norvasc (to P22.50 from the present P44.50), anti-diabetic Diamicron (to P7.35 from P14.75), antibiotic Augmentin suspension 60 ml (to P179.50 from P359), among others.

Senator Juan Ponce Enrile had earlier accused a drug firm of trying to "bribe" Malacañang with 5 million discount cards worth around P100 million in order to avoid the implementation of the MRP.

The drug firm, Pfizer, denied the charge. -- with reports from Cecille Lardizabal, ABS-CBN News

Freddie Aguilar won’t apologize to Charice and Arnel for monkey remark

Singer Freddie Aguilar has no plans of issuing an apology for his comment that Charice (Pempengco) and Arnel Pineda (Journey band frontman) only proved what foreigners had said about Filipinos, being likened to monkeys because they would only mimic the styles and songs of other international artists.

“Bakit ako mag-a-apologize? I am speaking out the truth so why do I have to apologize? It’s my opinion and I am entitled to one. I am fighting for the truth,” he reportedly said.

“Sa mga nagre-react sa akin ngayon negatively, hindi ko kayo masisisi pero sana ay mamulat na tayo. Manggagaya ang marami sa ating mga Pinoy kaya kailangang magbago na tayo. Mahirap ang buhay pero mas hihirap kung magpapatuloy pa tayo sa panggagaya. Nawawala ang ating national identity kaya paano tayo paniniwalaan sa labas ng bansa? Wala talagang tutulong sa atin.” he added.

Audio CD of alleged convo among Lolit Solis, Kho and Belo

Katrina Halili’s lawyer, Atty. Raymund Palad made public an audio tape/recording that allegedly contained conversations among Lolit Solis, Dr. Hayden Kho Jr., his mother Irene, Kho’s lawyers led by Lorna Kapunan, Dr. Vicki Belo, and public relations practitioner Reli German.

The meeting was conducted apparently to plan Kho and Belo’s next move as the video controversy raged on, a plan dubbed as “Project Angels and Demons” with Lolit Solis as the orchestrator.

Meanwhile, Solis remains unfazed by criticisms. “Kung sino man ang naglalabas niyan [audio recording], kung akala nila makakatulong sa kanila, fine, make my day. Kung ang balak nila sirain ako, wala ka nang masisira sa akin sirang-sira na ako,” she said.

Jackson's mother may challenge will executors

LOS ANGELES — Michael Jackson's mother asked for a judge's ruling Friday on whether she can challenge the authority of two men named in her son's will as executors of his estate without being disinherited.

The filing does not formally challenge the appointment of attorney John Branca and music executive John McClain as executors of Michael Jackson's estate.

But a favorable ruling could pave the way for 79-year-old Katherine Jackson to seek control of her son's estate, which has an estimated value of more than $500 million.

A judge granted her temporary control over roughly 2,000 items taken from her son's Neverland Ranch and slated for auction, but her authority expired and was given to Branca and McClain. She had sought to control Jackson's estate, but that was before the singer's 2002 will was filed in Los Angeles.

It names Branca and McClain as Jackson's choice for co-executors of the will, and states his estate should be placed in a private trust.

Jackson's trust included a "no contest" clause that calls for anyone who challenges the will to be disinherited. Katherine Jackson, her three grandchildren and unnamed charities are beneficiaries of the estate.

The filing states that Katherine Jackson's attorneys continue to confer with attorneys for McClain and Branca and no final decisions have been made.

"Mrs. Jackson and her counsel have not yet decided whether to object to the appointment of the named executors or to suggest an alternate appointment," the filing states.

A phone message left after business hours Friday for Paul Gordon Hoffman, an attorney representing Branca and McClain, was not immediately returned.

The filing was first reported by RadarOnline.com.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff will consider how to handle the filing at a hearing on Aug 3. Lingering issues about Jackson's estate could be decided then, and the hearing will also focus on whether Katherine Jackson will be allowed to keep custody of her son's children, who range in ages from 7 to 12. - AP
